“Why ‘Shelter’?

It sounds like a simple word, but I think it's actually deeply personal, and that the space we make for ourselves is invaluable in our lives.”

— Christian Hurst, owner, CEO, chief contractor.

A long time South Lake local, Christian began his apprenticeship with his uncle in San Francisco, renovating old Victorian town houses. After relocating to the lake, he continued his training and acquired his own license in 2006.

Christian works closely with each and every client to see their vision through to completion.

If he’s not working on a project, you’ll find him surfing, skiing, or mountain biking, usually with his wife Melinda and two young boys, Caleb and Miles, not far behind.

Our Values.

Every project begins with an open mind and thorough communication. We strive to uphold the values of quality craftsmanship, inspired innovation, and thoughtful creativity with every contract we sign. As a company, we’re budget conscious and will adapt carefully to individual needs without compromising on our level of service.

Our Team.

We have a close-knit team of employees who work directly alongside Christian. Need a referral? We can do that too. We’ve built trusted relationships with a network of subcontractors over the years, all local to the lake.

Sustainability.

Shelter Building Co was the proud recipient of the first LEED Gold Award in the Lake Tahoe basin, in partnership with Healthy Home Consultants.
